After the well incident in the story of Prophet Joseph (PBUH), he neither returns to Canaan nor reveals his identity to his brothers. Instead, he orchestrates three significant events: Placing merchandise, setting the stage for the theft accusation, and ultimately detaining Benjamin. This study examines Joseph’s purpose in this approach using a descriptive-analytical method, focusing on two pivotal verses—15 and 89 of Surah Yusuf—to elucidate the wisdom behind his actions.
The findings indicate that verse 15 is not merely a comforting promise but a pedagogical mission. To achieve it, Joseph (PBUH) initially refrains from returning or revealing himself, and later, after creating the conditions mentioned in verse 58, manages Benjamin’s detention. His objective is to guide his brothers, gradually and practically, to fully grasp the gravity of the sin they had previously underestimated (verse 9).
Joseph’s method is clarified through the Qur’anic narrative style, which mirrors his own parting from his father, showing that he accomplished his educational mission by reconstructing the circumstances of his brothers’ wrongdoing. This integrated analysis also highlights the pedagogical and monotheistic role of Jacob (PBUH) and the elder brother, the accusation against Benjamin, Jacob’s ‘ḥājat al-nafs’, and the significance of the ‘ilm al-taʾwīl’.
